2002 - We began by donating through WPLG-Ch.10, Magnum's Force, a charity program led by station personality Diane Magnum. The rest is history. Every year, with proceeds form the annual SBW Century which was renamed the Adopt-a-Bike Ride in 2010, new bikes and helmets were given to various charities throughout the tri-county areas (Miami-Dade, Broward & Palm Beach).
2007 - The 1st custom Special Needs bike was designed in cooperation with Samantha's PT and the builder. The bike was assembled for free courtesy of Liza and Alex Zambrana, owners of zBike. (since closed)
Additional presentation of recumbent trikes and tandems for the blind along with other special Needs bikes followed through the PAL program and Broward County.
2006 - 2014 - Target & SBW - Circa 2006 - 2014 SBW club member, Neil Starr, approached Target and asked if they were interested in providing bikes and assisting with the presentation. Store manager, Prudi Sheehan was more than willing to help and a fruitful relationship began and lasted for nine tears.
2010 - Adopt-a-Bike became the official title for the SBW annual ride and the event moved from Brian Piccolo Park to Markham Park.
2012 Adopt-a-Bike was incorporated as a 501(c)3 non-profit Foundation with the gracious assistance of Grafton Carlson, Esq. and South Broward Wheelers.
Community Support - Adopt-a-Bike participates in local festivals distributing FREE helmets (with a fitting) and safe cycling materials. Our Rodeo program includes school visits to educate children and teaches in safe cycling and walking to school issues. Included is always FREE helmets and a goody bag with take home material.
We are funded by out event sponsors and personal donations from wonderful people - like you. All donations are greatly appreciated and used to their fullest capacity.
